Security Bulletin

This security bulletin contains information about 4 vulnerabilities.

1) Memory corruption

EUVDB-ID: #VU4245

Risk: High

CVSSv4.0: 7.3 [CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N/E:P/U:Amber]

CVE-ID: CVE-2016-7287

CWE-ID: CWE-119 - Memory corruption

Exploit availability: Yes

Description

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target system.

The vulnerability exists due to boundary error. A remote attacker can create a specially crafted web page, trick the victim into opening it, trigger memory corruption and execute arbitrary code on the target system.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may result in complete compromise of vulnerable system.

Mitigation

Install update from vendor's website.

Vulnerable software versions

Microsoft Edge: All versions

Microsoft Internet Explorer: 11

Q & A

Can this vulnerability be exploited remotely?

Yes. This vulnerability can be exploited by a remote non-authenticated attacker via the Internet.

How the attacker can exploit this vulnerability?

The attacker would have to trick the victim to visit a specially crafted website.

Is there known malware, which exploits this vulnerability?

No. We are not aware of malware exploiting this vulnerability. However, proof of concept for this vulnerability is available.

2) Cross-site scripting

EUVDB-ID: #VU4243

Risk: Low

CVSSv4.0: 1.2 [CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A/VC:N/VI:N/VA:N/SC:L/SI:L/SA:N/E:U/U:Clear]

CVE-ID: CVE-2016-7282

CWE-ID: CWE-79 - Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation ('Cross-site Scripting')

Exploit availability: No

Description

Vulnerability allows a remote authenticated attacker to perform Cross-site scripting attacks.

An input validation error exists in the way Microsoft browsers handle certain untrusted input. A remote attacker can trick the victim to follow a specially specially crafted link and execute arbitrary HTML and script code in victim's browser in security context of vulnerable website.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may allow a remote attacker to steal potentially sensitive information, change appearance of the web page, perform phishing and drive-by-download attacks.

Mitigation

Install update from vendor's website.

Vulnerable software versions

Microsoft Internet Explorer: 9 - 11

Microsoft Edge: All versions

3) Security restrictions bypass

EUVDB-ID: #VU4242

Risk: Medium

CVSSv4.0: 1.2 [CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A/VC:L/VI:L/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N/E:U/U:Green]

CVE-ID: CVE-2016-7281

CWE-ID: CWE-264 - Permissions, Privileges, and Access Controls

Exploit availability: No

Description

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to bypass certain security restrictions.

The vulnerability exists due to Microsoft browsers fail to correctly apply Same Origin Policy for scripts running inside Web Workers. A remote attacker can create a specially crafted web page, trick the victim into visiting it and bypass implied Same Origin Policy.

Successful exploitation of the vulnerability may allow an attacker to obtain potentially sensitive information and perform other attacks against victim.

Mitigation

Install update from Microsoft website.
