Security Bulletin

This security bulletin contains information about 2 vulnerabilities.

Updated: 28.04.2020

Updated list of affected software for vulnerability #1, added vulnerability #2.

1) Heap-based buffer overflow

EUVDB-ID: #VU27341

Risk: Medium

CVSSv3.1: 7 [CVSS:3.1/AV:A/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H/E:U/RL:O/RC:C]

CVE-ID: CVE-2020-3898

CWE-ID: CWE-122 - Heap-based Buffer Overflow

Exploit availability: No

Description

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target system.

The vulnerability exists due to a boundary error when processing files within the ppdFindOption() function in cups. A remote attacker can send specially crafted data to the daemon, trigger heap-based buffer overflow and execute arbitrary code on the target system.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may result in complete compromise of vulnerable system.

Mitigation

Install updates from vendor's website.

Vulnerable software versions

CUPS: 1.7.0 - 2.3.1

Q & A

Can this vulnerability be exploited remotely?

Yes. This vulnerability can be exploited by a remote authenticated user via the local network (LAN).

Is there known malware, which exploits this vulnerability?

No. We are not aware of malware exploiting this vulnerability.

2) Out-of-bounds read

EUVDB-ID: #VU27378

Risk: Low

CVSSv3.1: 3.7 [CVSS:3.1/AV:A/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:L/E:U/RL:O/RC:C]

CVE-ID: CVE-2019-8842

CWE-ID: CWE-125 - Out-of-bounds read

Exploit availability: No

Description

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to gain access to potentially sensitive information.

The vulnerability exists due to a boundary condition within ippReadIO function. A remote attacker can pass specially crafted document to the service, trigger out-of-bounds read error and read contents of memory on the system or crash the service.

Mitigation

Install updates from vendor's website.

Vulnerable software versions

CUPS: 2.2.0 - 2.3.1
