Description

This security bulletin contains information about 5 secuirty vulnerabilities.

1) Buffer overflow (CVE-ID: CVE-2024-5243)

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target system.

The vulnerability exists due to a boundary error within the handling of DNS names. A remote attacker on the local network can trigger memory corruption and execute arbitrary code on the target system.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may result in complete compromise of vulnerable system.

2) Command Injection (CVE-ID: CVE-2024-5227)

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the target system.

The vulnerability exists due to improper input validation within the handling of the username parameter provided to the /usr/bin/pppd endpoint. A remote unauthenticated attacker on the local network can pass specially crafted data to the application and execute arbitrary commands on the target system.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may result in complete compromise of vulnerable system.

3) Heap-based buffer overflow (CVE-ID: CVE-2024-5228)

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target system.

The vulnerability exists due to a boundary error within the handling of DNS responses. A remote attacker can pass specially crafted data to the application, trigger a heap-based buffer overflow and execute arbitrary code on the target system.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may result in complete compromise of vulnerable system.

4) Stack-based buffer overflow (CVE-ID: CVE-2024-5242)

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target system.

The vulnerability exists due to a boundary error within the handling of DDNS error codes. A remote unauthenticated attacker can trigger stack-based buffer overflow and execute arbitrary code on the target system.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may result in complete compromise of vulnerable system.

5) Reliance on Security Through Obscurity (CVE-ID: CVE-2024-5244)

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to compromise the target system.

The vulnerability exists due to reliance on obscurity to secure network data within the cmxddnsd executable. A remote attacker on the local network can execute arbitrary code in the context of root.
