Description

This security bulletin contains information about 3 secuirty vulnerabilities.

1) Buffer overflow (CVE-ID: CVE-2025-25724)

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target system.

The vulnerability exists due to a boundary error when processing .tar files within the list_item_verbose() function in tar/util.c. A remote attacker can create a specially crafted archive, trick the victim into opening it, trigger memory corruption and execute arbitrary code on the target system.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may result in complete compromise of vulnerable system.

2) Heap-based buffer overflow (CVE-ID: CVE-2024-57970)

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target system.

The vulnerability exists due to a boundary error within the header_gnu_longlink() function in archive_read_support_format_tar.c. A remote attacker can pass specially crafted .tar archive to the application, trigger a heap-based buffer overflow and execute arbitrary code on the target system.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may result in complete compromise of vulnerable system.

3) NULL pointer dereference (CVE-ID: CVE-2025-1632)

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to perform a denial of service (DoS) attack.

The vulnerability exists due to a NULL pointer dereference error in bsdunzip.c. A remote attacker can pass specially crafted archive to the application and perform a denial of service (DoS) attack.
