CVE-ID: CVE-2024-25260

CWE-ID: CWE-476 - NULL Pointer Dereference

Exploit availability: No

Description

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to perform a denial of service (DoS) attack.

The vulnerability exists due to a NULL pointer dereference error within the handle_verdef() function in readelf.c. A remote attacker can trick the victim into passing a specially crafted file and perform a denial of service (DoS) attack.

Mitigation

Update the affected package elfutils to the latest version.

Vulnerable software versions

Ubuntu: 22.04 - 24.10

elfutils (Ubuntu package): before 0.186-1ubuntu0.1

Q & A

Can this vulnerability be exploited remotely?

Yes. This vulnerability can be exploited by a remote non-authenticated attacker via the Internet.

Is there known malware, which exploits this vulnerability?

No. We are not aware of malware exploiting this vulnerability.

2) Buffer overflow

EUVDB-ID: #VU106004

Risk: Medium

CVSSv4.0: 4 [CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:H/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N/E:U/U:Green]

CVE-ID: CVE-2025-1365

CWE-ID: CWE-119 - Memory corruption

Exploit availability: No

Description

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target system.

The vulnerability exists due to a boundary error within the process_symtab() function in readelf.c. A remote attacker can trick the victim into passing specially crafted file to the application, trigger memory corruption and execute arbitrary code on the target system.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may result in complete compromise of vulnerable system.

Mitigation

Update the affected package elfutils to the latest version.

Vulnerable software versions

Ubuntu: 22.04 - 24.10

3) NULL pointer dereference

EUVDB-ID: #VU106002

Risk: Low

CVSSv4.0: 1 [CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A/VC:N/VI:N/VA:L/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N/E:U/U:Clear]

CVE-ID: CVE-2025-1371

CWE-ID: CWE-476 - NULL Pointer Dereference

Exploit availability: No

Description

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to perform a denial of service (DoS) attack.

The vulnerability exists due to application does not properly control consumption of internal resources within the handle_dynamic_symtab() function in readelf.c. A remote attacker can trigger resource exhaustion and perform a denial of service (DoS) attack.

Mitigation

Update the affected package elfutils to the latest version.

Vulnerable software versions
