#VU8033 Out-of-bounds write in LabVIEW

Published: 2017-08-30 | Updated: 2017-09-04

Vulnerability identifier: #VU8033

Vulnerability risk: High

CVSSv3.1: 8.6 [CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H/E:P/RL:O/RC:C]

CVE-ID: CVE-2017-2779

CWE-ID: CWE-787

Exploitation vector: Network

Exploit availability: No

Vulnerable software:
LabVIEW
Universal components / Libraries / Scripting languages

Vendor: National Instruments

Description
The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code execution.

The weakness exists in the RSRC segment parsing functionality of LabVIEW due to out-of-bounds write when parsing of virtual instrument (VI) files. A remote attacker can send a specially crafted VI file, trick the victim into opening it, cause a controlled looping condition, trigger arbitrary null write and execute arbitrary code with privileges of the current user.

Successful exploitation of the vulnerability may result in system compromise.

Mitigation
Install update from vendor's website.

Vulnerable software versions

LabVIEW: 16.0
