Japanese video game developer Game Freak, known for its work on the Pokémon franchise, has confirmed it suffered a cyberattack, resulting in a data breach that exposed sensitive information. The studio, which co-owns and develops the Pokémon video game series, issued a statement acknowledging the breach, which occurred in August.
According to the company’s statement, the attackers gained unauthorized access to Game Freak’s servers and stole the personal data belonging to over 2,600 current and former employees, including names and email addresses.
While the company confirmed the theft of employee data, it did not clarify whether any unreleased projects or future game details were leaked, despite rumors that upcoming Pokémon games were among the compromised materials.
Over the weekend, news media reports surfaced saying that source code, design documents, and development materials from various Pokémon games had appeared online. The leaks allegedly include previously unseen Pokémon art and internal documents, with some of the leaked content being posted across multiple platforms, including Discord, Reddit, and X (formerly Twitter).
