The Finnish Customs office (Tulli) announced the takedown of the darknet marketplace called ‘Sipulitie,’ which sold illegal narcotics. The agency also confirmed the seizure of the site's servers.
The online marketplace, which served both Finnish and English-speaking users, boasted a turnover of €1.3 million (approximately $1.42 million). Sipulitie is the successor to Sipulimarket, another darknet site trading illegal drugs with a turnover of more than €2 million, which was taken down in December 2020 as part of a joint operation involving Finnish and Polish law enforcement.
The ongoing investigation revealed that after Sipulimarket's closure in 2020, its administrator launched Sipulitie. The same individual is believed to be behind another illegal site, Tsätti, a chat-based drug sales platform that launched in 2022. Finnish authorities have now shut down Tsätti as part of their crackdown.
The confiscated servers allowed Finnish Customs to identify Sipulitie's key figures, including its administrator, moderators, and customer service staff. In addition, law enforcement has identified both the sellers and buyers involved in the narcotics trade on the platform.
